About Waveform Mountain

Waveform Mountain is a father/daughter synth duo from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, who have just released their debut album. Anders (Candace) Woodland, (they/them), writes the lyrics and melodies, and is lead vocalist. Jon Woodland, (he/him), composes synth music and arranges and mixes the tracks. Seb Woodland (he/him) –  Anders' brother – joins in on some of the music composition process, and provides guitar, bass, and backing vocals.

Waveform Mountain formed in January 2022, when Anders asked Jon if he’d like to complete a music writing challenge with them: they suggested that they write and record one song per month, beginning in February, for the rest of the year. At the time, Jon had just completed the new Edgetone Studios, and Anders thought this project would be a good chance to connect and make use of the space!

After they finished their first song, The Hermit, both Anders and Jon knew they wanted to take the project further than originally intended. What began as a father/daughter hobby turned into a full-time project: they loved what they had created so much that they decided to write, record, produce, and release a full album together under their new band name: Waveform Mountain

Over the next 12 months, Anders, Jon, and Seb, (who tagged along on recording days so often that he became an honorary ‘third member of the duo’) wrote and recorded their first album: PROCESSING…

PROCESSING...

Waveform Mountain's debut album

Our debut album, PROCESSING... , establishes Waveform Mountain's unique sound with rich, arpeggiating synths and ethereal vocals. 12 tracks span multiple genres, and the band members struggle to pin down where, exactly, they fit in the music scene. Anders describes the album as having "woodsy mountain fantasy vibes".  Jon describes their sound as "lush and complex layers of swirling, pulsing synths with driving beats".

Inspired by recent changes and challenges in their life, Anders wrote lyrics which helped them to process their past and welcome their future. Their lyrics explore intense themes, including the complexity of coming into a queer identity, the overwhelming desire to bury and gloss over grief, and the relief that comes with eventually coming to terms with painful events.

The album, as a whole, has an optimistic tone. Amongst discussion of these challenges emerges a narrative of inner strength, power, and hope: the overarching message in PROCESSING... is that facing one’s past and accepting the inevitability of grief and change can lead to happiness, love, and a sense of release.

PROCESSING... is about acknowledging where you came from, and welcoming the person you are becoming with open arms.

PROCESSING... was released on May 3, 2024.
